It has been awhile since I have updated the family blog. I got so bogged down with trying to keep up with my two onlines stores, the husky site, and jewelry and puppy sales. It just got to be overwhelming. I have decided that I will post the latest family news here. Much easier to keep up one blog, than to try to keep 4 websites and 7 blogs.

Here is the latest news. I believe it is spring, although it is pretty hard to tell at times. Here is is almost June and we are still having funky weather in most places. Now Mom and I don't do well in the cold. Mom and Jack have been spending a lot of time at the Mexico house. If the sun doesn't come to you, you pack up and go where the sun shines. It is always warm and sunny in Mexico and they really do love it there. The long drive does them in so they are looking into buying some real estate that is closer..... like Palm Springs or the desert. It sure would be nice to visit them in Palm Springs during winter..... oh BOY!

Al has been very busy trying to get his greenhouse business off the ground. He has been searching for propety in Utah that he can put a modular home on, and of course a greenhouse addition. He's applied for a SBA loan so they have him jumping through the hoops there. For anyone who has ever applied for a small business loan, you know this is a long drawn out process. He is also working on his greenhouse kits, doing bids for greenhouse constuction, and still doing small remodel jobs here and there, so his life has been full. Thank goodness the snow has finally melted in Utah.

I don't hear much from Bill and Dar these days, so I am not really sure what is new there. They still spend a lot of time at their house in Big Bear. Who wouldn't? It is really beautiful there.

I never hear a word from Barb so I am clueless as to what is new there. Her and Jerry are going to vist Mom for a few days so Mom will fill me in on the latest scoop. If there is anything exciting to report I will let you know.

As for me? I have been so busy, sometimes busier than I want to be. Sales are going good at the two Etsy stores. I had two litters of pups this past winter. Aleutia is now in a Motherly way, so it looks like I will have a litter of summer pups. Oh boy, more puppy bucks!!!!! But I do love those little husky babies. They are sooooooo cute.

The kids are fine and doing what most kids do. They are busy with their families and young ones. I remember those days, even though it's been a long time since I tended to pre-schoolers. I do NOT envy them. I keep reminding them pay back's a bitch, lol. I love being Grandma. You can love the grand kids and them and send them home when they get cranky, lol. They are much more fun now that they are walking and talking and have turned in to little people. :-)

That pretty much sums up the latest family news. All of us are sure glad that winter is behind us and summer is around the corner. It was a very long and cold winter here in the north country. The winters in Utah aren't much better.

I hope everyone is enjoying sun, warmth, holidays, get togethers, barbecues, summer patio parties, FUN! Take care and have a fun summer!

Boop
LVShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18398877573051235933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8325367506996816047.post-10323712365354538012007-11-19T19:19:00.001-08:002007-11-19T19:44:28.470-08:00Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!!!!!!

Grandma and Buddy Jack are headed south to Mexico to spend Thanksgiving. They are picking up Barb and Bill & Dar will be meeting them at the border. What a grand place to celebrate! Soaking up some sun, sipping margarita's..... that SURE sounds good to me right now. What I wouldn't give for some warmth and sun. I sure wish I could join you all, (sigh,) but hopefully next year.

Here's wishing everyone a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving!!!!!

Love and Hugs!

P.S. I have Mom's pictures from Italy and promise I will get them posted as soon as I can. It won't be until after the 12/1 craft fair. I promised Al I'd get his flute pic's up on his website too. Sorry I am falling behind on the job, but life has been busy and hectic. Hopefully things will settle down again after the holidays.LVShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18398877573051235933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8325367506996816047.post-4124933813186292842007-10-24T00:56:00.000-07:002007-10-27T20:19:40.840-07:00It's off to Italy!Mom and Jack are off to tour Italy with Auntie Di. They left Oct 16th and will be back around the 25th or so. I can't wait to see the pictures so I can get them posted on the blogs. How FUN!!!!!!!!! Have a good time and a safe trip you guys. They are now back and had a wonderful time. They will hopefully share some photo's soon.

Al is recovering from his knee surgery and in Physical Therapy and loves the pool and hot tub he gets to use while he is there. He has been riding his bike to work the knees. He is winterizing the bus and bunkering down for the long winter. He is doing GRRRRRRREAT on his diet.

Kiersa got rushed to the hospital for an appendicitis attack. She had to have surgery and is back home now. Her Mom is staying there during the week of the 21st to help out with baby Cohen.
Get well soon Kiersa!

Haven't heard a word from Bill. Hope you are staying safe with the fires. I am sure you are standing guard on both places? Yikes! I saw pictures and it looked like the fires were in your back yard in Alta Loma.

Haven't heard much from Shannon. Ditto on the fires.

Never hear from Barb, but Mom clues me in if something is new. Latest news was Barb and Jerry got evacuated for a night and they were told to head for Home Depot and they should sleep in their car? Barb grabbed her 4 legged kids and her wedding dress and ran to the car. Mom told me that the winery where they got married burned to the ground....... SAD!

As for me? The last puppy should be leaving this week. I too am getting geared up for the cold winter. I needed a winter project to fill the idle time while I was snowed in for the winter. I have taken up making custom semi-precious gemstone jewelry, beads, and beadwork and have a new Blog page, Beads n Things.

Ok, so what else is new? If anyone has any news, let me hear from you.

Hugs to all.

BooLVShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18398877573051235933noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8325367506996816047.post-20102495317416415202007-09-08T09:48:00.000-07:002007-09-08T10:08:51.688-07:00Catching Everyone up to Speed
With all of the Family member's blogs it is hard to keep up with the news, so I am going to post the latest updates here, in one centralized post. As it is with life, everyone has been busy as usual, now that the weather has been nice. The greenhouse crops have been awesome. Mom's and Al's gardens produced lots of veggies. Both Al's and Mom's Goji Berry bushes have blossoms, none on Boo's. Boo hoo! Everyone has enjoyed sun, warmth, summer! The temps are quickly changing though, as fall is settling in upon us. Won't be long and a few of us will have snow!

Mom and Jack harvested Wednesday night so the grapes are gone to market. Yeah!!!!! Now they are going to take a vacation and head to Mexico.

Al is having knee surgery next week so he will be recovering for a few weeks. He also started a diet and is doing terrific! Way to go Al!!!!!! Spam is still a Spammie-roid. Al reported (a week ago) that she found a fresh pile of cow dung and had quite the time rolling in it..... coming home very stinky. Yucky poo!

Everyone now knows that I have a new litter of puppies... woo hoo! They are 5 days old now and I just took current pics for anyone who wants to see them.

Steve got a raise, so he is jazzed!

Haven't heard from Shannon, so don't know what is new there....

Haven't heard from Bill, Tom or news of Barb either, so??????

So that's all folks, unless someone sends me some more news to report.

I hope everyone is out enjoying the last bit of summer and good weather that we will have for awhile. Love and Hugs to all!LVShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18398877573051235933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8325367506996816047.post-29348460087670824312007-09-04T13:50:00.000-07:002007-09-04T13:51:54.755-07:00Happy Birthday Jack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LVShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18398877573051235933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8325367506996816047.post-47563461670027297462007-08-16T10:41:00.001-07:002007-08-16T10:45:58.325-07:00August Birthday's

Happy Birthday to Bill, Mom and Barb.

(Is Tom's B'day in August too?)

I am posting this info late, but as some of you know my laptop crashed and I have played hell recovering programs and files. Woohoo, we are well on our way to our Goji empire, lol.

Update: As of Thursday, my Goji seeds from Arkansas in Jiffy greenhouse have sprouted. It also took a week to the day. Seeds in the planter with potting soil have all kinds of new sprouts, but it takes a few days longer this way. Wolfberry seeds still just have just a couple coming up, so don't waste your money buying seeds. The seeds that sprouted the easiest are the ones that came right from the berries.

Al's have only been in the ground about 5 days, so he should have sprouts by the weekend. He is having some really nasty weather in Utah. Heavy winds, hail, freezing temps at night. Thank goodness he has hot pots and the greenhouse. I hope your veggies are surving in the hot pots Al.
LVShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18398877573051235933noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8325367506996816047.post-57894330358827881092007-04-15T09:48:00.000-07:002007-04-15T12:19:54.484-07:00Growing your own Goji plants from seeds?

I want to share some information here, as I know many have asked the question, how do I grow Goji plants from seeds? I have done a whole lot of research, and there are several ways that you can do it. I have tried several methods and I will tell you what works the best, (at least for me so far.)

Sun dried, vs shade dried? Seeds vs planting seeds from dried berries? Oh what to do! I tried growing 3 types of seeds. Wolfberry seeds ordered online, seeds from pods (actually a dried berry - ordered online,) and seeds that were taken from edible berries that were soaked overnight. I planted seeds in "Jiffy 72" greenhouses, planters filled with potting mix, and some were simply put on cotton in a small plastic dish and covered with a plastic lid. I used a recycled dish from a frozen dinner.) You do not need a fancy grow system, I learned. The first seeds to come up were the seeds from the edible berries that were placed on the cotton, covered and placed in a cupboard in my laundry room. Close to 90% of the seeds did germinate this way. I inspected my other seeds and this morning one of the wolfberry seeds is growing. It is growing in the container with the potting soil. These were planted at the same time that I placed the seeds on the cotton, which was 1 week ago. The seeds placed in the Jiffy Greenhouse were planted 4 days later.

Okay, so we know that works. You can plant the seeds from edible berries, they can be sun dried, and they will germinate! Cool! No need to buy expensive seeds, pods, plants, etc... and no need to buy expensive seed starters if you do not want to. Simple works!

Now, what to do with the seedlings once they have germinated? Wait. Wait until the seedling has two leaves on it and then very gently transfer it to a larger pot, with a mixture of potting soil and sand. The plant requires good drainage in order for it to survive. Keep in mind if you do use the cotton or paper towel method, you will have to plant your seedlings into larger pots in a couple of weeks, and you might lose some. If you start out using the Jiffy greenhouses, you can transplant the peat pellet and seedling directly in to a larger pot, filled with the potting soil/sand mixture. You would probably not lose many this way. I have read you can also plant directly into the ground at this point, but several sources have said that for the first winter you should keep the plants greenhoused, so for this reason I will keep mine in pots until next spring. Also note, you will not get berries until the second year, and plants are fully mature at 4-5 years (when you will get the best yield.)

Cow dung, duck dung and seaweed fertilizer are the best fertilizers for your Goji plant. They do have to go dormant in the winter in order to get berries in the late spring or early summer. They do best outdoors, but you can grow them indoors (and get less berries.) You have to self pollinate them this way, however, and I do not have a clue how you do that. They are pollinated by bees.

There is much controversy on the web as to what seeds produce the best berries and from what regions. I have done some pretty indepth studies in this area and it all comes down to this:

Himalayan goji is traditionally grown and harvested "wild" rather than "farmed". Dedicated users note that the mountains of their origin are the only place where the berries are considered to have full beneficial properties. Inner Mongolia, (Mongolia includes Tibet and Nepal,) the provinces of Ningxia and Xingjian, and the Heavenly Mountains of western China contain the primary growing grounds for "real" Himalayan goji.

A good source for information on the Lycium Barbarum plant is from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfberry

Mom (http://whtoakranch.biz) and Al (http://smallmtn.net) now have their seeds planted. Mom is using the Jiffy 72 Greenhouse, and Al is using Jiffy 7's in his greenhouse. I will report back as to their success and time frames it took their seeds to germinate.

If you have questions or would like to comment, please feel free to contact us.
blhamann83856@aol.com
http://windtalkers-siberians.comLVShttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18398877573051235933noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8325367506996816047.post-54681110929639068122007-04-12T22:58:00.000-07:002007-04-12T23:10:17.507-07:00April Family News!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcERNo4Dc5ynxIzQK8uL23IQOLFHCwNXtNzNQFk1h8IRNWvFghvA4nIGnCkcEuap7tGb0TZLYB8yZffcd5oJa0j1pR1THR5TX-jMmAGxc2GB9g-IjOXLtiqfhKdIV39P0k9xSRFWhYyRE/s320/4-10-07+Puppies+007.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5052790681173922162" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg76wO24V9AbpcBwwqt5rTi3wLjkFVuKb7tom5UBn8rNrknAhsVJbPXT7POzCTuUdatBKhEeGxm1m51RJGwi9G8AGaEdMMhcrfMhOj22FUb7bAtMAhNfOLu0CN6CbNlw_PsJ4rRCCAcfnY/s320/Maters+growing+Big.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5052790702648758658" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggk2v7mXFlxR0cf1SvXn2OMWnIbkvERpuDaT85v_7WLjRcPBWKVymsVM-D9JO8nVm4zfy_GnlLLFgUZ5mSyl1g-rw5LwXKc_Gkgt74f9spykOZr_xmTHalOZlVGeovgtXBe-JxGZJ7tyU/s320/210px-Lycium-barbarum-fruits.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5052790728418562450" />
Al posts new pictures of his greenhouse crops. It seems Google was doing it's blog maintenance during the same time I clicked to submit. Now I really hate that! All of that typing, up in smoke..... grrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The condensed version is probably better anyway as I was getting a bit dingy from lack of sleep.

The latest family news is our Goji fever! We recently discovered Goji berries and were totally amazed at the health benefits eating these berries does for you. Now we know, you are probably asking yourself, what in the world is a Goji berry? Well up until very recently we didn't have a clue either. It is the berry from a plant known as Lycium Barbarum, wolfberry, Lycium Eleagnus Barbarum.... (say what?) The plant originates from China, Mongolia, Tibet, and that general area. There is a lot of controversy on who and what region grows the best berries, but there is at least 64 known variations of this plant.

After doing extensive reading, far more than we wanted to, it basically came down to this! The berry is basically the same. The constituents and healing properties are the same. The taste may vary and I suppose it is all about your own personal preferences. The health benefits are simply amazing! We have read testimonials and actual scientific studies and it is no joke! The Goji berry is a true "super food."

Because of this we have ordered berries for our personal consumption. In addition we have ordered (we being Al, Audrey and Boop,) seeds and plants that we will be growing. We hope to soon harvest our own berries. We will also sell the berries, seedlings and plants, so cross your fingers for us and wish us luck on our latest endeavor. We will say that we learned early what NOT to do! At least we were fortunate that we learned right from the get-go, so it wasn't too costly!

Now we won't go into all of the info as we have taken what we felt was the most useful information and put a page on Audrey and Jack's White Oak Ranch site. You can read it and then decide for yourself. You can go directly to the page by going to:

http://whtoakranch.biz/ranchhealthtopic/index.html

I would like to note that while researching I came across a Goji blog that had testimonials. I read that pets could also benefit from Goji berries. I also read a testimonial from a woman who had suffered from psoriasis for over 10 years. After eating Goji berries her condition immediately cleared up (in a weeks time.) Any time she started to break out she just ate a couple handfuls of Goji berries for a few days and it kept her from having a full blown breakout. One of my huskies had a pretty serious rash around her eyes, ears and mouth from a zinc deficiency (which huskies are somewhat prone to.) I tried the Goji berries on her (which the dogs love, by the way.) Sure enough, in just a few days the rash quit spreading and in less than a week the rash is almost gone! I am a believer.

I am posting a picture of what a Goji (Lycium Barbarum) plant and it's berries so you can see what it looks like. The weekend is almost here! I just wanted to give you an update on Al. He got his new solar water heater and shower installed this past week. His plants are also doing good. He posted "pics" on his blog, so if you haven't visited it in a while, go check it out.

Note to the kids, you guys are doing great on customizing your blogs. They are looking really looking good. Love all of the "sparkle tags" and graphics. The music is cool too! WTG! Everyone got music added to their blogs, which I think is a nice touch. Mom and Jack can check it out when they get back from Mexico. Yes, they are down there sucking down Margarita's and soaking up some sun. Boy, what I wouldn't give to trade places!

Ok, I am off to off to feed the critters..... duty calls.
